Judith McKay is a surrealist and abstract artist captivated by glorious twilight skies, dripping cotton candy clouds, roiling shimmery water and birdlike dancing trees. Her intensely coloured, vibrant landscapes are influenced by magical realism and surrealistic dreams. The concept underlying her work is that of inseparable and contradictory opposites. The playful duality of abstract and representation—altering perception and reality. We think we recognize the places in these paintings but they are not as we remember them. Recent Toronto exhibitions include HIRAETH, a solo show at the Urban Gallery, Toronto and FUSION, a shared solo show with Moses Salihou at the Freedom Factory Gallery, Toronto. You may check out her work July 12, 13 and 14 at the Toronto Outdoor Art Festival. Her work can also be found in private and corporate collections across Canada, the US and overseas. Judith is involved in the arts community, including as a member of the board of Artscape, a Toronto-based not-for-profit urban development organization that makes space for creativity and transforms communities as well as the Opening Night Committee of Art Toronto, Canada’s international fair for contemporary art.
